Here i will show you how to do certain things in the wolfquest game.

1. Finding a mate. (Only on Single Player)
Start a single player game by clicking "New Single Player" on the main menu. You'll then be able to customize your wolf. After that, start the game. And now, in order to find a mate in your game, you must fight off or chase a wolf away from each territory. (Purple circle on the map.) Once you do that, go to a territory of your choice (Amethyst Mountain is best!) and you should be able to find a Dispersal Male or Female. (Choose the wolf that is your wolf's opposite gender) If you do not see one then try backing off a distance and then run up to the wolf again until it's dispersal. Doing so even works when trying to get different colors for the dispersal wolf. Once you start communicating with the dispersal wolf, you must talk nicely to it. There will be different options such as "I like you" or "Let's start a pack!" and "Let's Play". You should use only those phrases to the wolf. If the wolf likes you, the bar below it will earn hearts. Once it has 5 hearts, it'll become your mate and then you can name it. I hope this helps you! Remember to save your game when you're done. (Hit "esc" and you will get a list of options including "Save Game") You can also click "Player Stats" to see your wolf's accomplishments.

2. Hunting.
To hunt, you must go to a hunting ground. (Orange circle on the map.) Once you get there, click "V" on your keyboard to go on scent view. You should find a trail of purple or light blue dots on the ground after looking around. That is the elk scent. Follow it until it turns into a solid, purple color, and you will bump into an elk herd. (If the trail turns light blue, then go backwards!) Hit "V" again to get off scent view. Look through the elk until you find the weakest one. (They also have a health bar you see when you come near them.) Then charge at your target. A tiny red wolf head will show up and you must press "Spacebar" or Click on your mouse to bite. Repeat this and the elk's health will go down. Be careful because your health will go down too! Once the elk is dead, go to it's carcass and a tiny green wolf head will show up. Now press "Spacebar" or Click and you can start eating the elk and regain your strength. Elk carcasses have a purple smoke scent on scent view. Be careful because grizzly bears will find your elk carcass and start a fight for it. So eat fast!

FAQ

1. What do i do after getting a mate?!?!
You will not be able to have pups with your single player mate yet if that's your main question. You cannot scent mark, claim a territory, or get a den yet. All that is in episode 2 which is supposed to be released before the end of August or later. You can currently hunt and run around yellowstone with your mate. Just be patient for episode 2. (time goes by pretty fast so no worries! =P)

2. My mate is not coming to me or cooperating....
You should really try howling (Press "H" on your keyboard). Your mate will come back to you since the howl kinda wakes him/her up lol. If he/she doesn't, try restarting your game and opening your saved game again. And if your mate has had this problem for too long, contact the wolfquest team so they can try fixing the issue at, bugs@wolfquest.org

3. AHHH my multiplayer isn't working!!!!!
Calm down it's probably just a normal connection error that goes on usually after updating the game. But you can't leave your game un-updated with the thought of it working since it'll ask you to update it eventually. Version 1.6.4 has been having a few bugs on the connection. You could also try turning off your firewall. I'm not sure how to give you a direct location to the firewall since i have a different Operating System on my computer so try searching it on your computer search. Once you open it, you should be able to find the off button.

WolfQuest Episode 2 Announcement-November 08

Main Info: Episode 2 is tentatively titled "Slough Creek" for the area of Yellowstone where your wolf settles down to raise pups. Yes, the focus will be on pups! We hope to launch it next spring, just when wolves in the real world are raising their pups. We will reveal more in the next newsletter in January, which will mark WolfQuest's one-year anniversary. Until then, keep buying those WolfQuest t-shirts!

"Well, some of you have been waiting patiently (and some not-so-patiently, but we're glad you're excited for the game!), so I just wanted to thank you for waiting for the new update.

If you are subscribed to the newsletter, you should be receiving that shortly, but for those non-subscribers on this forum, here's what I can say:

We have received some much-needed funding (thank you, Best Buy Children’s Foundation, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, and the Minnesota Zoo Foundation!), and the estimated release date for the next level is now set for spring/summer 2009.

What will this new level look like? Winter will play a small part in the next level, but for the majority of the level, think spring! Yes, there will be pups, as well as something having to do with territories and maybe a few more surprises. We will make another announcement around WolfQuest’s 1-year anniversary in early January, when we’ll hopefully be able to reveal a little more. Until then, keep your eyes peeled for more details and keep buying those WolfQuest t-shirts!

Episode 2 News-March 09

We have much to share this month about the upcoming WolfQuest: Episode 2. But first, a quick concern.

Multiplayer Behavior

Lately, on some multiplayer WolfQuest games, a few people have been acting inappropriately. Finding a mate is a normal part of wolf behavior, and is the main goal in the single-player game, but these people take chats with "need mate" in the title to be an invitation for inappropriate behavior. Though the majority of these chats are completely innocent, in order to reduce inappropriate behavior and keep WolfQuest a safe place for both kids and adults, we will no longer allow the word "mate" (or variations) in the title of multiplayer games. If anyone sees these or other inappropriate multiplayer game titles, please submit an abuse report with a screen shot or chat log and the username of the person acting inappropriately. (Instructions on how to send an abuse report can be found on here.)

With that out of the way, we can focus on the next episode!

Wolf Pups!

The main focus of Episode 2 will be wolf pups, and here is a sneak peak of one such pup. Be sure to click the link to see the animation too! Pups will be six weeks old, with coloration based on the coats of your wolf and your mate. You will be able to interact with your pups (in fact, it will be essential to their survival!), though you will not be able to design them. The game will accurately reflect real threats to pups, and like real wolf pups, it is quite possible that some will not survive. So you must do your best to take care of them!

Questions and Answers

Rumors have been flying about features in the new episode. Here is a little more information that we can share about them.

When is the new episode coming out? Episode 2 will be released this coming August.
Will there be screenshots or a video showing features of the new episode? Definitely. We will release screenshots in the months leading up to the launch, along with a teaser video.
What will the missions be like? Unlike Episode 1, WolfQuest: Slough Creek will have a series of missions that you must complete in order to advance through the game. Several of those will focus on raising and protecting your pups.
What will the dens be like? Tiny and cramped! In fact, because real wolf dens are so small (hardly room to turn around), you will not be able to enter the dens. You will have a choice of dens from several sites throughout the Slough Creek area.
Any changing of seasons or night & day? The episode will take place in May, since that is when real wolves are raising their pups. To make the most of our resources, the episode will be set in just one season, so we are skipping winter and focusing on spring. One mission will take place at night.
Will you be able to explore both Amethyst Mountain and Slough Creek? This episode will focus on Slough Creek. You will use the same wolf pair from the first episode, just in a different part of Yellowstone.
Will Episode 2 be a free download like the first episode? Yes, it will again be free to download. The new download will contain both episodes 1 and 2, and you must have found a mate in Episode 1 before you can play the new episode. You can of course open any saved games (wolf name, experience points, mate, etc.) in Amethyst Mountain if you wish.
Will you make any other "quests" (like HorseQuest or LionQuest) after WolfQuest? No, our funding is for WolfQuest only, sorry!

Ravens and T-shirt Contest

Ravens and wolves have an interesting symbiotic relationship. Scientists in Yellowstone and other areas have sought to understand how ravens and wolves influence each other, though they have really only scratched the surface of this complex association. Ravens often circle in the air over dead animals, which wolves sometimes use as a cue to find carcasses to eat. In return, ravens frequently finish off any leftovers on a wolf-killed carcass and even eat alongside the wolves.

We hope to add ravens to Episode 2, so we are holding a contest to raise the funds to do so:

If we sell 50 WolfQuest t-shirts by June 1st, we will add ravens to Episode 2 as a guide to find carcasses.
If we sell 100 t-shirts by June 1st, the ravens will also land and eat carcasses.

The profit from these shirts goes directly to WolfQuest development and maintenance, so whether or not you find ravens exciting, please consider purchasing a shirt to help support the project. Bad usernames can get you banned forever and never return to my site. Making more than one account is very annoying because it is completely pointless to do. When you revive an old topic, you are just bringing back the old news that nobody wants to hear. I can almost trust nobody as a moderator except my siblings. Learn about wolf ecology by living the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park. Play alone or with friends in on-line multiplayer missions, explore the wilderness, hunt elk, and encounter stranger wolves in your quest to find a mate. Ultimately—in Episode 2, coming in 2009—your success will depend on forming a family pack, raising pups, and ensuring the survival of your pack.

The WolfQuest experience goes beyond the game with an active online community where you can discuss the game with other players, chat with wolf biologists, and share artwork and stories about wolves.

Multiplayer-You can open a server or join another's to chat and play with your friends as a pack. It's fun being able to venture through the 3D Yellowstone as a wolf with many other wolves which are indeed real people. You can hunt together or just walk around the forests. You can race, hunt, chat, and do many other things with people from around the world!

Single Player- In single player, you are a single wolf who first goes on a mission to find a mate. You fight against stranger wolves around Yellowstone and hunt to live and survive. Once you find a mate you will get more help in hunting. In episode two, you can raise pups with your mate!

This page will educate people on wolves and give them new ideas on how to protect wolves. Also about wolf behaviour and how i feel about wolves.

Wolf Hunting
In Yellowstone National Park wolves thrive in packs or live as loners. Wolves hunt different types of prey including, elk, hares, and rarely larger animals. In hunting, wolves such as gray wolves will pick out the weakest one and then attack. Usually wolves would go after an elk calf or some other weak animal. I suppose wolves would follow a herd of migrating caribou to hunt or they would just wait for the caribou to come to them. Playing wolfquest would mainly help people understand the hunting of elk and hares in a wolf life. Wolves are indeed great hunters in packs. A lone wolf would posibly not be able to kill an elk or such on it's own. A pack of wolves could at least go high enough to try and kill a bison. When a grizzly bear comes too close, a wolf pack would attack. I've never heard of a wolf killing a grizzly bear but they must've killed a cub. Now i would like to share with you the steps of wolf hunting,

1. Pick out the weakest animal.
2. Stalk the herd slowly and carefully.
3. Try not to be seen otherwise the herd will runaway and the hunt will be called off.
4. When the time is right charge at your target.
5. Try to seperate it from it's herd.
6. Have your pack attack the target once it is seperated from the herd.
7. In no time the animal will be dead and the wolves can feast on it.
8. If the hunt is failed then no worries there is always tommorrow!

Wolf Behavior
Here are some ways wolves communicate. I do not own this info, it is from Wikipedia.

Dominance – A dominant wolf stands stiff legged and tall. The ears are erect and forward, and the hackles bristle slightly. Often the tail is held vertically and curled toward the back. This display asserts the wolf's rank to others in the pack. A dominant wolf may stare at a submissive one, pin it to the ground, "ride up" on its shoulders, or even stand on its hind legs.
Submission (active) – During active submission, the entire body is lowered, and the lips and ears are drawn back. Sometimes active submission is accompanied by muzzle licking, or the rapid thrusting out of the tongue
and lowering of the hindquarters. The tail is placed down, or halfway or fully between the legs, and the muzzle often points up to the more dominant animal. The back may be partly arched as the submissive wolf humbles itself to its superior; a more arched back and more tucked tail indicate a greater level of submission.
Submission (passive) – Passive submission is more intense than active submission. The wolf rolls on its back and exposes its vulnerable throat and underside. The paws are drawn into the body. This posture is often accompanied by whimpering.
Anger – An angry wolf's ears are erect, and its fur bristles. The lips may curl up or pull back, and the incisors are displayed. The wolf may also arch its back, lash out, or snarl.
Fear – A frightened wolf attempts to make itself look small and less conspicuous; the ears flatten against the head, and the tail may be tucked between the legs, as with a submissive wolf. There may also be whimpering or barks of fear, and the wolf may arch its back.
Defensive – A defensive wolf flattens its ears against its head.
Aggression – An aggressive wolf snarls and its fur bristles. The wolf may crouch, ready to attack if necessary.
Suspicion – Pulling back of the ears shows a wolf is suspicious. The wolf also narrows its eyes. The tail of a wolf that senses danger points straight out, parallel to the ground.
Relaxation – A relaxed wolf's tail points straight down, and the wolf may rest sphinx-like or on its side. The wolf may also wag its tail. The further down the tail droops, the more relaxed the wolf is.
Tension – An aroused wolf's tail points straight out, and the wolf may crouch as if ready to spring.
Happiness – As dogs do, a wolf may wag its tail if in a joyful mood. The tongue may roll out of the mouth.
Hunting – A wolf that is hunting is tensed, and therefore the tail is horizontal and straight.
Playfulness – A playful wolf holds its tail high and wags it. The wolf may frolic and dance around, or bow by placing the front of its body down to the ground, while holding the rear high, sometimes wagged. This resembles the playful behavior of domestic dogs.

And howling helps wolves communicate in several ways such as,
"This is our territory"
"We are about to start a hunt"
"Come here everyone!"

Wolf Pack & Pups
Wolf Packs can stay together for a very long time. Usually they start out with two wolves(a male and female). The two wolves are of course mates and their pups would start the pack. Once the pups grow up the pack is complete. The adult pups would help in hunts. The entire pack wuld work together to bring down a large elk or other animal. They would easily defend their homeland. Pups are very important for the future of the pack. Although some pups don't make it to adulthood. Some of the pups get killed by a grizzly bear, cougar, or something else. If a pup strays away from the pack while playing there is no doubt it will get caught by a predator unless it's parents come to the rescue. I believe pups see the outside world when they are 6 weeks old. They are very cute as pups, but they will surely become dangerous predators when they grow up. Especially without human contact. If a human raises a pup to adulthood the pup might become a little harmless. But wolves always get their wild instinct back. Now back to talking about the pack. Wolf Packs can be very highly dangerous when working in a group. In Yellowstone National Park, the strongest wolf pack is the Druids. I don't think anyone could live through a fight with them. Sometimes wolves in the pack would disperse so they can live a life of their own. Then the pack cycle goes on....

Wolf Dens
All wolves live in a den. Some wolves take over abandoned fox dens or they would dig their own or find another abandoned den. Their dens are just a hole in the ground. The inside of the den isn't very spacious unless the wolf tried expanding it by digging. Although the entrance would seem pretty big. "The entrance to a typicals wolf's den is about 14-25 inches (36-64 cm) across and oval-shaped. The tunnel into it is usually about 6-14 feet (2-4 m) long and they are normally located in high ground areas with a water source nearby." It is true that a wolf would have a den in higher grounds and near food and water. Some dens have tunnels leading to a open area all underground. Wolves can have a den for a very long time. Some are used year after year. I'm not sure an entire pack could fit into one little den, unless they don't.
